Our walks and events aim to broaden your understanding of mushrooms and inspire you to learn more. Mushroom walks begin at a designated location, where we gather for a brief overview of what to expect and some “Fungi101” facts. We then carpool, if necessary, to a nearby trail and hand out baskets, collection bags, and field guides to take with us into the forest. Trails are chosen for walking ease and space for social distancing. Along the way, we learn how to look for, sustainably harvest, and identify mushrooms. We talk about which fungi are edible, their medicinal properties, and how to prepare them. We also focus on historic uses, current scientific trends, and new innovations. 

At Stissing House, you’ll walk by a mountain of butter under a glass cloche when you pass by the open kitchen. It functionally doesn’t really do much, but it’ll set the tone for the evening as you’re making your way through the 18th-century tavern in Pine Plains. The food at this American restaurant isn’t exactly breaking new ground, but details like the dozens of Ebenezer Scrooge-esque candlesticks on every flat surface and multiple fireplaces will make you slow down and remember that you’re not in the Big City anymore. It’s a great place to bring a date, or pretend you’re yearning for the freedom to marry for love in a romance novel.  Once you sit at your Little House on the Prairie farm table and take in the framed historical doodles and exposed wood beams, the dishes will transport you to a different era. The comforting tavern food is cooked perfectly, and it’s hard to avoid feelings of love (platonic or otherwise) when you’re splitting a rabbit and tarragon pie with someone in the candlelight. The menu is slightly similar to its NYC sibling King (see: their simple, plump roasted chicken), but it’s still worth braving the Taconic on a Friday to eat dinner here. Even if that’s only to spend a few hours watching the lights slowly dim with the sunset and discuss with your date whether you’d do well in a society without cell phones. Instagram

Poets Walk Trail is a nice, easy walk that features scenic views of the Hudson River and Hudson Bridge through the trees. The trail is well-maintained, and there are some wooden benches along the way where you can take a break and enjoy your surroundings. There is very little shade in the first half of the loop, so wear sun protection. It's also a good idea to wear shoes with good traction, as some areas can get muddy after rain.

A bakery, pantry, and all-day café that epitomizes that low-key countryside chic that the Hudson Valley is known for. What does that look like, exactly? There’s bread from nearby Sparrowbush Baker, cheeses from Talbott & Arding, and balsamic vinegars from Flamingo Estate. On an entry table, abundant flower arrangements come courtesy of famed florist Ariel Dearie. (Some of her repeat customers? Sofia Coppola, Marc Jacobs, and Annie Leibovitz.) Grab-and-go food, including rotisserie chicken, are ready for the taking. In the back, waiters serve Mediterranean-inspired dishes like flatbread with broccoli rabe, stracciatella, and Calabrian chili, as well as grilled Hudson Valley steelhead trout. On the shelves, meanwhile, you’ll find vintage ironstone pottery and French ceramics sourced from local antique dealers. All of it is housed in a warm space, painted with Farrow and Ball shades of New White, String, and Wimborne White paints and lit by Nickey Kehoe sconces. The combined visual effect is like being swaddled in a cashmere blanket. Instagram
